There are paws on the ground and they are mine
Sooty and small between bladed grass
they will tell you of my claws
There are legs on stilts and they are mine
Wiry and fiery, the limbs of a runner
they will tell you i am sly
There is a tail in the field and it is mine
Sunrise orange dipped in ashy gray
they will tell you it is white
There are black ears turned to the sky and they are mine
Pointed, pricked to hear the dance of the wind
they will tell you i am red
There is a muzzle in the air and it is mine
Turned up to taste the dawn
they will tell you of my teeth
Sunlight beams down on my back
& for a moment I am beautiful
The pines cast their golden pollen to the winds
& I, the fox, rejoice in their laughter
There is silver and red in my sun-dawn fur
& it traces a line around my throat
Why look, there are no white clouds this morning
& so the coming day must be glorious
The cord in my neck does not disagree
& it says, I know you have been waiting
There is blood on the ground and it is mine
Red fox, given my name at last
i will tell them my fur is sunrise amber
I know today I will die
& that is alright
There has never been a more beautiful dawn
